Enlarged prostate, nowadays called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), is the gradual enlargement of the prostate. It occurs in over sixty percent of all men over the age of fifty, and three quarters of men over seventy years of age. The usual cause is hormonal changes causing overproduction of prostate cells. Eventually the enlarged prostate obstructs the urethra, so that complete emptying of the bladder becomes difficult.

Symptoms of enlarged prostate can include: -

• A weak or slow urinary stream

• Difficulty starting urination

• Frequent urination

• Getting up frequently at night to urinate

• Straining to urinate

• Continued dribbling of urine

Enlargement of the Prostate: -

An enlarged prostate is a non-cancerous condition in which the narrowing of the urethra makes the elimination of urine more difficult. It most often occurs in men over age 50. A non-cancerous condition that affects many men past 50 years of age enlarged prostate makes eliminating urine more difficult by narrowing the urethra, a tube running from the bladder through the prostate gland.

Enlargement of the prostate is not a malignant condition, but it does put pressure on the urethra and can create a number of urinary complaints such as frequent urination, urinary urgency, the need to get up at night to urinate, difficulty starting, a reduction to the force of the urine stream, terminal dribbling, incomplete emptying of the bladder and even the inability to urinate at all.

Diet to Reduce Enlarge Prostate: -

• Change your eating habits and begin a healthy exercise routine. If you're overweight, you're at greater risk of getting more aggressive forms of prostate cancer and dealing with an enlarged prostate. Losing weight can decrease your risk.

• B Vitamins: - Necessary for all cellular functions. Anti-stress vitamins.

• Vitamin B6: - Has anticancer properties.

• Vitamin A: - Potent antioxidant and immune system enhancer.

• Vitamin E: - Potent antioxidant and immune system enhancer.

• Vitamin C: - Promotes immune function and aids healing.

• Fish: - Fish, especially salmon, mackerel and trout, which are high in Omega-3 oil, are good for the prostate. The Omega-3 oil helps prevent the growth of cancerous tumors including tumors in the prostate, which an enlarged prostate can be a symptom of.

• I drink and consume very few dairy products because they contain too much calcium which is a No- No for the prostate. Instead I use SOYA milk and other soya products. It is also easier for me to do this as I have become lactose intolerant over the years.

• Olive oil: - Great for salads and pouring over your veggies. So, forget about those other awful salad dressings. Olive oil is full of antioxidants. Steer clear of corn oil and canola.

• Fruits and Vegetables: - Fruits and vegetables not only provide good nutrition to help you body put itself in balance; they keep you regular and reduce pressure on prostate. Favor leafy vegetables like spinach, kale and chicory. Tomatoes, watermelon and grapefruit contain lycopene, which may help the prostate.
